One Less Vehicle, One Step Closer to Spain: A Major Milestone

There are certain moments during a major life change that suddenly make everything feel real. You can spend months researching, planning, budgeting, and dreaming about the future, but sometimes it takes one specific event to remind you that your plans are no longer just ideas. They are becoming a reality.

That is exactly how we felt this week when we sold our Hyundai Palisade.

On the surface, it may seem like a simple transaction. People buy and sell vehicles every day. For our family, however, this was much more than that. Selling the Palisade was another step in our journey toward relocating to Spain in 2026. It was another reminder that we are actively preparing for a completely different lifestyle and a brand-new chapter for our family.

As we continue preparing for our move, selling a vehicle before moving to Spain has become one of the biggest milestones we have reached so far.

The Numbers Worked Out Better Than Expected

Whenever someone sells a vehicle, one of the first questions people ask is whether it made financial sense. Fortunately, the outcome ended up being better than we originally expected.

We did have to bring a few hundred dollars to the table to complete the sale through CarMax. At first, that felt a little disappointing. Nobody enjoys writing a check when they are trying to sell something. However, once we looked at the bigger picture, the situation was actually much more balanced.

We had skipped the vehicle payment for the month, and the amount we paid to finalize the sale was very close to what that payment would have been anyway. In practical terms, it felt almost like an even trade. Instead of making another monthly payment on a vehicle we planned to sell, we were able to eliminate that obligation completely and move forward with our plans.

An added bonus was being able to cancel the insurance policy associated with the vehicle. That immediately reduced our monthly expenses and saved us from another insurance payment over the next couple of months.

When you are preparing for an international move, every expense matters. One of the benefits of selling a vehicle before moving to Spain is the opportunity to reduce recurring costs and redirect those funds toward future goals.

More Than Just Selling a Vehicle

While the financial benefits were certainly welcome, the emotional side of this milestone had an even bigger impact.

For years, the Palisade was part of our daily lives. It took us on family trips, grocery runs, school activities, and countless errands. Like most vehicles, it quietly became part of our routine. We rarely thought about it because it was always there when we needed it.

That changed the moment we handed over the keys.

Suddenly, the empty space in the driveway became a visible reminder that our move is getting closer. The future we have been discussing for years is no longer some distant dream. It is becoming a reality one step at a time.

That is what makes selling a vehicle before moving to Spain feel so significant. It is not really about the vehicle itself. It is about what the sale represents. It represents progress, commitment, and a willingness to let go of the things that tie us to our current way of life.

Every item we sell and every responsibility we eliminate brings us closer to our goal.

Adjusting to Life with One Vehicle

One interesting side effect of selling the Palisade is that our family is now operating with just one vehicle.

The last time we lived with a single vehicle was back in 2011. At that point, there were only two drivers in our household. Coordinating transportation was much simpler than it is today.

Now we have three licensed drivers sharing one vehicle.

As you might expect, that requires a little more planning. We have to communicate schedules, coordinate errands, and occasionally wait for someone else to finish what they are doing before the vehicle becomes available again.

So far, the adjustment has not been nearly as difficult as we expected.

In many ways, this temporary situation is helping us prepare mentally for the future. It is encouraging us to think differently about transportation and become more intentional about how we use a vehicle.

The reality is that this stage is only temporary. Selling a vehicle before moving to Spain is part of a larger plan. Before we leave the United States, we also intend to sell our remaining vehicle.

Looking Ahead to a Car-Free Lifestyle

One of the things we are most excited about is experiencing a different transportation culture.

In much of the United States, daily life revolves around driving. Communities are often spread out, and many errands require getting into a vehicle. Whether it is going to work, buying groceries, or meeting friends for dinner, driving is often the default option.

Many parts of Spain offer a different experience.

Walkable neighborhoods, public transportation, local markets, and nearby services make it possible for many residents to live comfortably without owning a vehicle. While cars certainly exist in Spain, they are not always the center of everyday life in the way they are in many American communities.

That lifestyle is one of the reasons we are excited about the move. We look forward to walking more, using public transportation, and relying less on vehicle ownership for everyday activities.

Preparing for that transition is another reason selling a vehicle before moving to Spain makes so much sense. It allows us to gradually adapt instead of trying to make all of the changes at once after we arrive.

The Move Is Starting to Feel Real

For years, our conversations about Spain focused on the future. We talked about where we wanted to live, what life might look like, and how we could make the move happen.

Now those conversations are being replaced by action.

We are downsizing. We are simplifying. We are making decisions that directly support our long-term goals. Each completed task makes the move feel a little more tangible.

Selling a vehicle before moving to Spain may seem like a small step in the grand scheme of an international relocation, but for us it feels significant. It is one of those milestones that clearly marks the transition from planning to doing.

There is still plenty of work ahead. We have more belongings to sort through, more decisions to make, and eventually another vehicle to sell before our departure. But reaching this milestone has given us a renewed sense of excitement and motivation.

Every major journey is made up of smaller steps. Some are large and obvious. Others seem minor at the time. Looking back, however, they all contribute to the bigger picture.

Selling our Palisade was one of those important steps.

It reduced our expenses. It simplified our lives. Most importantly, it brought us one step closer to the life we are building in Spain.

The road ahead is still long, but after this week, Spain feels closer than ever. And that is an exciting feeling.
