A Huge Week of Progress: Packing, Pallets, and Preparing to Leave

The last few days have been some of the busiest and most productive days we have had since starting this journey. It feels like everything is happening at once, and while it can be overwhelming at times, it is also exciting to see how much progress we are making.

Packing for Spain has officially entered the final stretch.

Yesterday, some wonderful friends came over and helped us pack our first shipping pallet. Having extra hands made a huge difference. What could have taken us an entire day was completed much faster thanks to their help and encouragement.

Moving internationally is not something most people do very often, so there has been a lot of learning along the way. Every box packed and every pallet wrapped feels like another milestone toward our new life.

Clearing Out the Kids’ Bedrooms

Today, our friends came back to help us again, and we focused on clearing out the kids’ bedrooms.

My husband and our friend carried all of the furniture downstairs and moved everything into the living room and spare room. Seeing those bedrooms empty for the first time was a strange feeling. Those rooms have been filled with toys, books, clothes, and memories for years.

Now they sit mostly empty, waiting for the next chapter.

Packing for Spain has involved a lot of emotional moments, and seeing the children’s rooms cleared out was definitely one of them. It is another reminder that this move is no longer something we are planning for someday. It is happening right now.

Finding New Homes for Beautiful Furniture

One thing that has made this process a little easier is knowing that many of our belongings are going to people we know or people who will genuinely appreciate them.

I contacted someone who had already purchased an outdoor table from us, and he expressed interest in taking one of the bedroom sets as well. The other bedroom set is going to my brother for his daughter.

Both bedroom sets are beautiful and in excellent condition. While it is never easy to part with furniture that has been part of our family home, it feels good knowing they will continue to be used and appreciated.

My brother is also taking our dining room set.

That particular piece has been at the center of countless family meals, holiday gatherings, birthday celebrations, and everyday conversations. Knowing it will stay within the family makes it much easier to say goodbye.

Packing for Spain has taught me that letting go of things is often easier when you know they are going to someone who will enjoy them.

The Final Pallets Are Finished

One of the biggest accomplishments of the day was finishing our final two shipping pallets.

That means we are officially done.

In total, we are sending three pallets to Spain by boat.

This has been one of the largest logistical pieces of our move. Deciding what to bring, what to sell, and what to donate has required countless conversations and decisions. Every item had to earn its place on those pallets.

The good news is that the shipment should arrive about one month after we do. While it will be an adjustment living without some of our belongings for a few weeks, one month is much better than some of the longer shipping timelines we have heard about.

Knowing the pallets are finished feels like a huge weight has been lifted off our shoulders.

Packing for Spain suddenly feels much more manageable now that one of the biggest tasks is behind us.

The Pallets Are Heading to Spain

As exciting as it was to finish the pallets, the next milestone is happening today. The shipping company is scheduled to pick them up, which means our belongings will officially begin their journey to Spain.

Seeing the pallets wrapped, labeled, and ready for transport is a strange feeling. We have spent weeks deciding what to bring, carefully packing everything, and making sure it was secured for the long trip overseas. Now, it is finally time to let them go.

Once they are picked up, there is really nothing left for us to do except wait for them to arrive. The shipment is expected to reach Spain about a month after we do, which is not too bad considering the distance they have to travel.

Today is also another busy moving day. My husband is heading out to pick up our moving van so we can start transporting items to Philadelphia. We still have several things that are going to his mother and brother, and this will help us get those items where they need to be before we leave.

Packing for Spain has involved much more than deciding what comes with us. It has also been about making sure the things we leave behind end up with family members who can use and enjoy them. Knowing that many of our belongings are staying within the family makes it much easier to say goodbye.

Presigning for the Sale of Our Home

As if finishing pallets and clearing bedrooms was not enough, we also went in to presign paperwork for the sale of our home.

That experience went well overall.

The paperwork itself was fairly straightforward, and it was nice to get another major item checked off our list. However, we are still working through some details regarding how we will actually receive the proceeds from the sale.

Since we will be in the middle of an international move, there are additional considerations that need to be addressed. We want to make sure everything is handled correctly so there are no surprises later.

Even though a few details still need to be finalized, the overall process went smoothly.

The Reality Is Sinking In

One thing I have noticed recently is that the reality of this move seems to become more obvious every day.

The empty bedrooms.

The furniture stacked downstairs.

The completed pallets.

The signed paperwork.

The growing number of items leaving the house.

All of it serves as a reminder that our lives are about to change in a very big way.

Packing for Spain started as an idea. Then it became a plan. Now it is becoming reality.

There are moments when it still feels surreal. We have spent so much time preparing, researching, and planning that it is hard to believe we are finally reaching the point where everything is coming together.

We Have to Be Out by Friday

Perhaps the biggest reminder of all is our deadline.

No matter what still needs to be done, we have to be out of the house by Friday.

That fact has a way of sharpening your focus.

There are still loose ends to tie up and final tasks to complete, but the timeline is no longer something in the distant future. The countdown is measured in days, not months.

Fortunately, we have accomplished so much already. The support of friends and family has made an enormous difference throughout this process. Whether helping pack pallets, move furniture, purchase items, or simply offer encouragement, we could not have made it this far without them.

One Step Closer to Spain

Tonight, I am tired, but it is the good kind of tired.

The kind that comes from making real progress.

The kids’ bedrooms are cleared out. The furniture is finding new homes. The three shipping pallets are finished. The home sale paperwork is nearly complete. The pallets are being picked up. The moving van is being loaded. And every day brings us closer to our departure.

Packing for Spain has been one of the biggest challenges our family has ever taken on, but it has also been one of the most rewarding.

There is still work to do before Friday arrives, but for the first time, I can truly see the finish line.

And that is a pretty amazing feeling.
