Our Story
For a long time, the idea of leaving the United States lived quietly in the background of our lives. It was something my husband and I would return to in conversation every so often, almost like a shared dream we were not quite ready to act on. We talked about what it might look like to start over somewhere new, to build a different kind of life for our family, and to experience the world in a more intentional way.
In those early conversations, it always felt far away. It was framed as a someday plan, something we would revisit in retirement or when the timing felt easier. It was exciting to think about, but not urgent enough to truly pursue. Life kept moving forward, and the idea stayed safely in the space of possibility instead of becoming reality.
That changed.
After the 2024 election, something shifted for us. The tone of our conversations became more serious and more immediate. What once felt like a distant dream began to feel like a real option that deserved attention now. The direction of the country started to weigh on us differently, especially as a family with Hispanic children. It no longer felt like something happening at a distance. It felt personal, and it pushed us to think more deeply about the kind of life we wanted for our kids.
We stopped asking, ” What if someday,” and started asking, “Why are we waiting?”
By the summer of 2025, we had made the decision. It did not happen in one perfect moment, but through many honest conversations that led us to the same place. We were ready to move forward.
That is when everything shifted from idea to action.
Suddenly, this dream required real work. There was paperwork to research, plans to build, and difficult conversations about what this move would mean for every part of our lives. It was not glamorous. It was detailed, sometimes overwhelming, and very real. But it was also grounding, because for the first time we were not just imagining a different life. We were actively creating it.
One of our first priorities was stability. I work remotely as a writer, contracting for a company, so we needed to be sure I could continue working from abroad. This move was never about leaving without a plan. It was about building something better while staying responsible and secure.
Then we had one of the most important conversations in this entire process. We talked to our kids.
We knew this decision would impact them deeply, so we approached it with care and honesty. Our son surprised us right away. He did not hesitate at all. He was excited from the start, full of curiosity and ready for the adventure.
Our daughter needed more time. She asked thoughtful questions about leaving her friends, her routine, and everything she knows. We gave her the space to process it and worked through her concerns together. Over time, her perspective shifted. What once felt uncertain began to feel exciting, and now she is just as ready as the rest of us.
In November 2025, we took the next step and traveled to Spain.
This was not a typical vacation. We were not there just to explore or relax. We were there as a family trying to understand where our future could realistically take shape. We paid attention to more than just what looked beautiful. We focused on what felt livable and what could truly feel like home.
We spent time in Valencia and Alicante, imagining what our daily lives might look like in each place. While both cities had so much to offer, Alicante stood out almost immediately.
There was no long debate. Something about it felt right. The pace of life, the energy, and the overall feeling all aligned in a natural way. We did not have to force the decision. We just knew.
That clarity gave us confidence, and that is when we set our date. July 10.
Since then, life has been full. We have been deep in the details of making this move happen. Paperwork, visa applications, selling belongings, and remodeling our home to prepare it for the market. Each day brings something new to figure out.
There have been moments of excitement where everything feels aligned and full of possibility. There have also been moments of doubt where the weight of this decision feels very real. This is a big change. We are leaving behind everything familiar, including the systems we understand, the routines we have built, and the life we have always known.
At the same time, we are choosing something more.
We are choosing to give our children a broader view of the world. We are choosing to immerse ourselves in a different culture and language. We are choosing a slower pace and a life that feels more aligned with what truly matters to us.
This has not been easy, and we never expected it to be. The decisions that matter most rarely are.
Now we are fully in it.
This space is where I will share all of it. Not just the highlights, but the real experience. The decisions, the mistakes, the wins, the hard days, and everything in between.
Because this is not just about moving to Spain.
This is about starting over with intention and stepping into a new life fully committed to the journey ahead as immigrants.
